Devante is a 16 year-old boy who loves being active and on-the-go. Devante is very athletic and loves to shoot hoops in his free time. He would love to be on a basketball team. He likes to run in 5K races, swim, go camping, and be outside in the summer. Devante can be shy when he is in front of a large group of people, but once he warms up he is eager to make others laugh and will engage in conversation. Devante does well in school and likes to learn. Devante tells people that he does not like “living in the gray” and prefers when things are “black and white”. He likes others to be honest and upfront with him and “tell him like it is”. Although he might not show it right away, Devante is extremely loyal and protective of those he cares about. Devante does not offer his smile freely, but when he does, it lights up the room.
Devante would do well in a family that enjoys being active and will provide him with opportunities to participate in sports and other outdoor activities. Devante is determined to do well academically and would need a family that can continue to encourage this goal. It is important that Devante not be placed in a family with children his age or that are younger than him. Devante needs a family that will be patient with him and will be able to provide the attention and nurturing he deserves.
That every young person whose life has been disrupted by trauma and subsequent child welfare intervention will be restored to a safe, permanent family with an urgency that honors the brevity of childhood.
